James Allen, Director of Policy, Governance and External Affairs said, “l’m looking forward to working with our new Sport and Civil Society Minister, Mims Davies. It is encouraging to see that the Prime Minister has appointed an MP with a clear passion for sport to this important role.
“At a time of political and economic uncertainty I would urge ministers at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to make sure they are representing our sector, which contributes £37bn to the UK economy every year, within Brexit discussions. The sport and recreation sector is one the UK’s key assets and represents the gateway to a ‘global Britain’, but for British sport to be successful and help achieve this vision, government must recognise its strategic importance.
“Our sector can also play a huge role in tackling some of the biggest social challenges facing our society, including poor physical and mental health, a lack of community cohesion and loneliness. For us to realise this contribution, we need support at the Spending Review next year, backed by meaningful cross-department collaboration.”
This Black History Month, the Sport and Recreation Alliance sought to celebrate the significant contributions Black individuals have made and continue to make to grassroots sport and recreation by engaging with leaders throughout the sports sector.
